Sscenemenswear.com Interview

This month we chat to Barry from the quality new Scene menswear store which we predict big things from.

www.scenemenswear.com

So how and why did you get started ?

Our shop opened in November last year after about a year of planning, in
between times the economy collapsed but we renegotiated the lease and went
for it anyway! The shop came about because of a lack of decent casualwear
shops in and around Birmingham, there are a few offering traditional
designer brands such as Armani, Boss and Prada but very little for anyone
wanting to dress down a bit and the casual football lads.

The website has been delayed slightly longer than we hoped but finally got
up and running in February.

How did you select your brands ?

We tried to do something a bit different and many of our brands are
exclusive to us in Birmingham at the moment, we've concentrated mainly on
brands with some history and also tried to support British brands eg.
Baracuta, John Smedley, Garbstore, Clarks Originals , Sunspel & Pantherella.

Which brands are proving popular so far ?

Well its still early days but in the shop Victorinox, Napapijri & John
Smedley have proved popular and everyone who's tried on a pair of Clarks
Originals has loved them.Online Fjall Raven has gone well, mainly in the
north still, 6876 also seem to have a bit of a cult following although they
havn't done too many pieces since we've opened. We've been trying to get
involved with the local scooter lads aswell and they seem to like the
Baracuta Harringtons along with the 1967 Levi's and the Clarks desert boots.

What stands out in the new season ,SS09 ?

We've just had some limited edition vintage Levi's 501 with gold plated
buttons and rivets, each pair individually numbered which look smart and some
of John Smedley's sea island cotton knitwear is so nice I'll almost be sorry
to sell it !!!

Which brands do you expect to become more popular in the next couple of
years ?

Victorinox definitely seem to be looking to get into the football casual
lads and some of their jackets and knits are very smart and also superb
quality. Fjall Raven look to be gaining a good following in the North aswell
which I'm sure will spread. Toywatch are making some nice fashion watches
also.

Which are your favourite brands right now ?

I really like some of the new Garbstore jeans and flying shirts and jackets,
I'm also struggling to go out without my pair of Clarks Originals which have
taken over from my trainers at the moment, don't think Ive had a pair since I
was about 9 but they are like slippers for comfort. I also like the English
made underwear from Sunspel and Pantherella, real luxury compared to some of
the bigger brands out there.

Your Plans for the next 12 months ?

We've got a couple of new brands on board for next winter and I'll always be
looking for something a bit different to keep us going but really its just
to survive at the moment!! I'd like to thank the customers who've shopped in
store and online with us so far and hope to see them again.

What is your full list of brands ?

 Currently we have 6876,Bailo,Baracuta,Clarks Originals,Feiyue,Fjall
Raven,Garbstore,John
Smedley,K-Way,Levi's,Napapijri,Pantherella,Sunspel,Superga,Toywatch &
