Stan Smith Article

Stan Smith (born Dec. 14, 1946) was the world's No. 1 ranked tennis player in the early 1970's. He was enlisted in the U.S. Army during the time he won the U.S. Open in 1971 and Wimbledon in 1972, while representing the United States in Davis Cup play. Smith first played the Davis Cup in 1968, and was a fixture in the international team competition until 1981, compiling a 35-8 record in singles and doubles play. All told, Smith won 39 singles titles and 61 doubles crowns in his career. Introduced in 1965 as the top performance tennis shoe, the "Stan Smith" was originally endorsed by Robert Haillet, then renamed in 1971 after Smith. Since then it has gone on to be one of the best selling shoes of all time, having sold over 30 million pairs.
